I'm wondering if others in the group have felt marginalized in their work place. Does anyone have any specific ways of dealing with the problem?

Dealing with marginalization is difficult. This is a subtle tactic for keeping anyone in a minority group from attaining recognition for their accomplishments or to receive critical information needed to succeed.

Vague or subjective tenure or promotion criteria is a good example. Having a "moving target" makes it impossible to catch up and allows those making decisions to waffle about who gets promoted. A woman may be reluctant to ask outright what is expected, while her male counterparts are given this information informally.

Having a mentor is critical in this type of situation. They can give you a lot of guidance and “inside information”. They can also champion you and your accomplishments. If a mentor is not available, then forming a support group of peers is another option. You can exchange papers, proposals, etc. and help each other by providing constructive criticism and sharing any information on how to navigate your particular workplace.
